Get Paid More at Work
by Justin Lukasavige

Everyone wants to know how to make more money.  What if you like where you work or do not desire to make a major move for more income?  I have great news for you if you fall into either of these categories.  You can make a lot more money without even leaving your company!

First, the bad news.  If you are covered under union representation, I’m sorry.  I spent seven years as an airline pilot and I was deeply connected to how unions work.  While unions are great in some instances, everyone is viewed as being created equal.  The downfall of the unions is the pay structure is almost always set up negatively.  Every union worker is created equal, but they also must remain equal.  No room for advancement exists.

Why does five-year employee who goes above and beyond to produce fabulous work make the exact same amount as another five-year employee who has only done the minimum necessary to keep his job?  If you do not see a problem here, stop reading; this article will not help you.

Now, for those of you still with me, here is the great news.  You do not have to remain at your current level!  There are literally hundreds and sometimes thousands of things you can do in the next twelve to eighteen months to overhaul your pay.

Add Value
You can add value by working harder and better yet, by increasing your knowledge.  When you leave your job, you take your knowledge with you.  Become an asset to your employer.  They will pay to keep you.

Become an Expert
Make them miss you if you decide to leave.  Get really good at what you do.  Be to go-to person.  I am not talking about the person that your co-workers dump their work on, but the person they go to when they need help and answers.  Be a resource to them.

Make Your Boss Look Good
Some call this brown-nosing.  Call it what you want, but your pay depends on it.  Your boss is in charge.  If you want to get ahead, make his job easier.  He will depend on you more and your status will rise.

Identify Your Worth
It begins with a plan.  What are you worth right now to your employer?  When you define what you want to be worth twelve months from now, the only thing left to do is build your value and figure out how to get there.

Learning is key in our society.  If you know only the slightest amount more than your co-workers you bring a tremendous amount of value to your company.  By increasing your company’s bottom line, yours should rise in proportion.
